Ive been ill all week with flu which although annoying has given me the chance to update my sketch book. I decided to do a few studies using collage which i feel worked out quite well although i did overwork a few of the pieces. here are my favourites, sorry about the quality.

The American Scene

After my introduction to screen printing on Tuesday I thought I would check out the American Scene exhibition at the Witworth art gallery. The exhibition looks at American print making from the early 1900's to 1960. I found this really interesting and was especially drawn towards the work of Leonard Baskin who had two large woodcut prints. The first "The Hydrogen Man" was a disturbing piece which depicts a human figure whose skin has been striped by the blast of a hydrogen bomb this encapsulated the post war anxiety of nuclear testing. His other work "Man Of Peace" shows a half naked man trapped within a barbed wire fence holding a dead bird. This iconic image was very symbolic and captures man's dogged pursuit of peace against the odds. I really like the boldness of the images and the message behind them. Overall I found the exhibition really inspiring and gave me some good ideas for my project. It was interesting to see how print making had changed over the years and I would definitely recommend seeing the exhibition.

Screen Printing

Today I had my first induction in screen printing which i really enjoyed and found very interesting. I have previously only dabbled with this technique but after this workshop I will definitely be making more prints.

Here is one of the prints I produced. I really like the finished result and feel it will transfer well into my project.

At last, finally got my laptop and belatedly got round to creating my first blog!

Ill jump straight in and start talking about my first project at uni which is based around food. At first I found this subject quite daunting but after a frantic brain storming session, I decided I would concentrate on the concept of genetically modified foods. As I starting point I spent several days researching the subject and looking at the pros and cons of this concept. I wanted to make my project visual and decided to create several models out of fruit which had a mechanical modified appearance to them resembling "Frankenstein" fruit. These were inspired by the work of Jim Bond and Tim Hunkin.

These were created using parts from electrical devices which I dismantled and rebuilt into the fruit. This is the first time I have ever tried anything like this and I was pleased with the results.

After talking to hazel I decided I would try to make the models more interactive to include switches, lights, moving parts etc. I may also look at making a permanent model out of clay.

The good thing about making the models out of fruit was that as they rotted they would take on a new form and identity. I constantly recorded these changes and will use these images as I continue through my project.
